Up to 300 specialists involved in the fight against breast cancer will travel to Manchester in April 2012 for the meeting of the International Association of Breast Cancer Research.
The four day summit, which takes place on 15 - 18 April 2012, will take place at The Palace Hotel and is expected to contribute over £500,000 to the local economy.
Visit Manchester worked closely with Dr Robert Clarke, a senior lecturer at The University of Manchester's School of Cancer and Enabling Sciences and a member of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, on the bid to bring the meeting to the city.
Dr Clarke is a member of Visit Manchester's Conference Ambassador Programme - a network that aims to support and assist local academics and professionals seeking to bring their industry conference to the city.
Paul Simpson, managing director of Visit Manchester, the tourist board for the Manchester city-region said: "This is another example of the Conference Ambassador Programme in action. There are a number of organisations and facilities in Manchester that work in the field of cancer treatment and so the city is a natural host for a meeting of this type."
Dr Robert Clarke added: "Manchester Cancer Research Centre want to improve cancer treatment for patients and hosting a conference for the world's best breast cancer researchers here in Manchester is one part of the strategy to achieve that goal. We have organised an exceptional programme and hope that many scientists and clinicians from around the globe will attend and help us improve prevention and cure for breast cancer."
