Bioethical debate to take place in Manchester

Biology experts will travel to Manchester in August for the 18th International Chromosome Conference (ICC).

ICC opens with an Ethical Debate which sees two world leading experts, Professor Alan Handyside and Professor Robin Ali, introduce key topics and their potential biological impact. A round-table discussion will then be led by international bioethics experts - Professor John Harris, Dr Sarah Chan, Dr David Hunter, Professor Soren Holm and Professor Sarah Cunningham-Burley.
This prestigious, 47 year old, conference will also focus on the many aspects of the interface between chromosome biology and the use of post-genomic technologies - 'Chromonomics'.
The conference will take place at the University of Manchester on 29 August to 2 September 2011.
Visit Manchester worked closely with Professor Dean Jackson (The University of Manchester) and Professor Darren Griffin (University of Kent) for a number of years on bringing this conference to Manchester.
Dr Jackson is a member of Visit Manchester's Conference Ambassador Programme - a network that aims to support and assist local academics and professionals seeking to bring their industry conference to the city.
Paul Simpson, managing director of Visit Manchester, said: "As the home of the world's first test tube baby, it's fitting that the International Chromosome Conference will take place in Manchester. This is a great example of the Conference Ambassador Programme in action and we are delighted to be welcoming a number of international experts to the city."
Professor Jackson added: "Help from staff at Visit Manchester has been invaluable in helping us to bring a truly international gathering of world-leading scientists to Manchester. It is a thrill for me to host this meeting at our brand new University Conference Centre. The event provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the success of both the University and Manchester as a vibrant and cosmopolitan city."
